Beyond Finger Pointing at the Autism Bogeyman

6 min readMar 23, 2019

Every week, it is my privilege, my heart’s delight to work in service as a guide to autistic adults worldwide. Their unique life stories are their own, and are not mine to share publicly, but I will say- my knowing them, their distinctive humanity, has expanded my mind, my heart immeasurably.

Each day, I’m blessed to have the support, the cheering on, of thousands of autistic persons, and their allies worldwide. Though I’ve not personally met most of them, I nonetheless count them as true friends.

As an ambassador of neurodiversity, inclusivity, acceptance of all persons- regardless of their bodies, the workings of their minds, I’ve intentionally steered around much of the hubris, the infighting inside the culture of autism, neurodivergence, in order to bind my time carefully to helping guide others.

Much like the Civil Rights movement, now marching into decades, the clean, clear lines of thought, action are simply not there. Even well meaning leaders fight, jockey for position in movements. Unfortunately, it’s the dark sided nature of humanity walking alongside of us.

Muddled, confused, and often barraged with voices shouting out, seeking villains for the lack of perfection in human beings, we fall forward- moving slowly towards the day of true neurodiversity. Called to be united…
